I used Prompt Engineering to generate two resumes targeting different industries that I am interested in. The two industries I picked were the Information Technology Industry and the Aviation Industry. I started by giving ChatGPT my original resume and then feeding it specific prompts like, “Re-write my resume to target the IT-Industry” I also fed it personal information about my history with specific aspects of that field. I followed similar steps with the Aviation targeted resume. I fed it information about my flight hours, endorsements and aspects of my training that I thought were pertinent to the resume. The more detail I added such as my computer building experience since the age of 11, running small tech repair side hustles and my roles building computers and managing flight simulation for AFJROTC in high school, the more interesting and targeted ChatGPT was able to make my resume.
The AI generated versions differ from my original by using industry specific language and highlight my skills that stand out to that specific industry. Both versions worded similar experiences differently to target what a company hiring for each specific field might be looking for in an applicant. It used system and analytical focused verbage for the IT field and operational safety, crew resource management and troubleshooting verbage for aviation.
Some things I learned is that AI is not perfect, and often times, it would leave out information and try to make it as short as possible without inputting previous details and data it already produced. I had to go through multiple iterations and prompts to get it where I wanted it and remind it to include the information it already created previously. Though it did make it easer by generating it for me, I feel as though the same amount of effort and brain power could be put into making my own resume with a better and more personal touch using AI only as a thesaurus rather than an author. I believe that AI is only as smart as we think it is and this has shown me that it really needs to be baby sat to deliver the results that we want it to.
